Case study: multiple issues with home computer
Home users can often find that their computers are suffering from a whole range of problems all at once- they run slowly, they seem to have all sorts of programs installed on them which the users aren't sure about (sometimes, other family members have installed software on them without the user's knowledge!), they sometimes crash or "get stuck"... the list can go on and on.
One recent example was a PC which had picked up a fake antivirus program from an Internet site, which kept making annoying popup screens to the point where it was no longer possible to use applications on the PC for any long period of time. The PC had numerous other issues- it was running slowly, it was failing to launch programs such as MS Office from the start menu, and it was also taking a long time to log the user account on.
The best course of action was to try to fix all the various problems during the same visit, which we managed to do. Often alleviating one issue means another problem goes away at the same time (different symptoms, same background cause). Once the work had been done, the Surrey Computer Support engineer sat with the user and went through some preventative measures which would help stop the same or similar issues cropping up again. The user was more than happy with the support received and has since had very few issues to report.
