Case study: network upgrade

A small business was using a network of PCs with various shared drives, but due to expansion of their business, they had reached the point where no further PCs could join a simple workgroup network. They needed to quickly upgrade their network to allow for continued expansion, so a business solution was needed as a matter of urgency.

We looked at the current office structure and came up with a proposal based on a Windows Server with all the PCs logging onto a Windows domain and accessing shared data located on that server. The proposal included such detail as setting up and configuring the new server, setting up new accounts for the users to log on with, migrating and consolidating the company data with all the correct permissions for users, implementing a backup strategy and (one thing that a number of IT professionals forget) retraining of users.

The result: a brand new network that allowed for many more PCs and users to be added, a reliable daily backup strategy to protect company data, shared network drives in one place for simplicity of use and administration- and in short, a solution that allowed the company to grow with renewed confidence going forwards.
